QNAP NAS & Antivirus - did I miss something?

QNAP NAS & Antivirus - did I miss something?

I have a QNAP TS-453A NAS. For a calendar week now it'southward been unable to update the antivirus definitions; even manually. It looks like it's running ClamsAV and is expecting a *.CDT file for the update. I can't observe that file anywhere on the ClamsSV download folio.

It seems I saw mention of McCaffee and QNAP a while ago. Has QNAP pulled a switcherroo? Do I accept to pay MC now? Is there a link to some where that talks nearly how to install and setup?

Thanks,
Carey

Yes, I think they had a one-time offer to purchase McAfee, but the offer expired 28 June.

ClamAV might be ameliorate suited for a Linux Bone anyway. You might need to start over and download information technology again.

P.S. The consensus in the other thread is that ClamAV was removed in an update and cannot be re-installed.

I don't think y'all should need Virus protection on the NAS itself.  You would want to run information technology on the clients accessing the files on the NAS.

Either way, an infected file has to be opened to infect your system.  So running a regular realtime scanner it on the client would catch those as the clients open up them.   Or if you accept your storage as a mapped drive on Windows, y'all can employ scheduled full scans if you wish across the network.

If there are exploits for the NAS itself, those would exist protected via patches, non AV.

Either way, an infected file has to be opened to infect your organisation. So running a regular realtime scanner it on the client would take hold of those as the clients open up them. Thanks. I wondered near that. The files on my NAS are either my media files or backups of some software from my windows machine. Windows Defender says they're ok but occasionally the NAS had complained about an older install file which I and then removed.

Best if using a QNAP as an FTP server to prepare client specific folders with custom priviledges (RO for example in most case). Alternative is to gear up a FTP server on a service like 1and1.com which is what I do as this isolates the files from my role network completely.

The bulk of the problems with QNAP security had to do with foolish or lazy owners who used the default passwords and default ports. Might every bit well put together a NAS with Windows equally the operating system (good reason why Microsoft had its corporate e-mail servers running Linux).
